Organic/Bio & Lidl

I did some research as bio and organic mean different things in Australia, however, in Europe they appear equal, which is easier to navigate!

I shop at Lidl but if you want me to research other shops like Diana / Profi / Euromarket I can. However they generally only have local produce and limited bio options, hence shopping at Lidl.

I discovered some good (ish) news (not great that it travels so far 🤨) that Lidl gets their organic produce from Ireland. A country like Ireland has strict regulations and they have little chance of getting away with malpractice (ie saying something is organic when it’s not.) So, if there is malpractice, it would come from an internal swap. So, fingers crossed people are being legitimate and trustworthy in Romania!

Lidl can now improve and ask farmers in each European country to begin organic farming, and then the food will be even healthier, as it’s grown on LOCAL SOIL, and much fresher. Not to mention, the transport and shipping impact on the environment will lessen.

Read below what I found on the Lidl website. I’m so grateful they are trying to provide healthier options.

Lidl website

“When it comes to quality and flavor, we know that local tastes best. We source millions of euro worth of products from over 275 suppliers on the island of Ireland.

Our local suppliers supply to Lidl stores right across Europe.

Which products can be certified organic and how do we recognize them?

Not every kind of product can be considered BIO. In general, the products included in this category are agricultural products, simply put, everything that can be produced on a farm starting from seeds to meat.

BIO fruits, vegetables, and grains are grown in natural conditions, on land that has been free from any chemical substance for the past few years, and the producers must keep a written record of all operations carried out day by day. Genetically modified organisms and irradiation are strictly prohibited. Starting from cultivation, only natural, ecological substances are used for them throughout the production process.

BIO meat comes from animals raised in natural conditions, in suitable spaces for harmonious development. They are fed only BIO feed and are not given growth hormones or antibiotics.

Foods containing several ingredients are BIO only if each ingredient used is also BIO. Some foods have only one BIO ingredient, and this can be stated on the packaging.”

So - always read the labels // it might state only the peas are organic in a vegetable mix, and they will highlight this for marketing purposes, and you will be led to believe it is all organic. Keep your eyes open and your senses aware!

I will do a post another day with evidence-based research about the harmful effects of pesticides on humans and the environment.

Lastly, there are minimal people locally who grow organically. Many people here lie. So the best you can do is to grow your own! Do you agree? I know it’s not that simple. And we all care about different things, but this is something I am so passionate about for my life and my family.

Love to hear from you in the comments! Have a great day guys. Ally
